WILD WEST WRESTLING
Wild West Wrestling was promoted by Ken Mantell, who had resigned as booker at WCCW in June 1986 to accept a similar position with Bill Watts' Universal Wrestling Federation (formerly Mid-South Wrestling, which underwent a name change when Watts attempted to go national). Eventually finding himself unable to compete with Jim Crockett Promotions and WWE, Watts sold the company to Crockett and Mantell lost his job after only a year.
Returning to Texas in summer 1987, Mantell began promoting WWW shows at the Fort Worth nightclub Billy Bob's Texas in opposition to WCCW, hiring Bill Mercer as commentator.for the group's TV series (taped by Continental Productions, which had previously been responsible for the syndicated World Class show). The promotion used mostly former WCCW talent including Wild Bill Irwin, the Missing Link, Buddy Roberts, Iceman King Parsons, John Tatum, Jack Victory and the recently departed Lance Von Erich, now wrestling as Fabulous Lance. Also featured on WWW's show was "Starfind", a weekly segment spotlighting rookie talent from its wrestling school.
The group had only been in existence for four months when Fritz Von Erich, looking to retire from the business, offered to sell 40% of WCCW to Mantell, with the remainder being split between Kevin and Kerry Adkisson and Sam Cohen, father of Steve and Shaun Simpson. An interpromotional war angle began at the Thanksgiving Star Wars card at Reunion Arena to set up the return of the stars from the glory days of World Class. Although none of WWW's wrestlers actually appeared on the card, the angle was kicked off with handbills (allegedly distributed by the rookie workers featured in Wild West's "Starfind" segments) which promoted an upcoming WWW show, and also sported a sketch of Brian Adias with his "Oriental Tool" thumb, as Brian later put it in interviews, "someplace I'd rather not mention!" Adias showed up unannounced at Wild West's next taping, demanding to know who the culprits were, and wild brawls began to erupt at both groups' shows. (The Thanksgiving card was also where Fritz revealed to a reporter from D Magazine that he was selling WCCW, stating, “Kevin and Kerry will still keep wrestling. But someone else is going to take over. I’m just tired. I’ve got to get out of the business.”)
The Fort Worth Wild West tapings were discontinued in December, after which the syndicated WWW show consisted of matches taped at the Sportatorium. WCCW booker Gary Hart, who was contractually obligated to also book Wild West following the merger, later revealed in his autobiography that he delegated that duty to his then pre-teen sons, Jason and Chad!
All available 1987 results for Wild West are listed below; the venue is Billy Bob's Texas except as indicated.
