GLOBAL WRESTLING FEDERATION: 1991-94
The Global Wrestling Federation began as an attempted purchase of both the Memphis and Dallas branches of Jerry Jarrett's USWA promotion by Joe Pedicino and financial backer Olu Oliami of Nigeria.  The change was set up on Memphis TV in late 1990 with an angle establishing the GWF as the sport's largest governing body.  After the angle was resolved with the USWA being chosen as Global's North American affiliate, a TV pilot taping was held under the GWF banner in Dallas on December 28, with that evening's matches also airing on the syndicated USWA Challenge show.  The proposed buyout fell through shortly afterward and Jarrett's group resumed running shows in Dallas, with no further mention of Global on its programming, until Pedicino finally closed a deal to purchase the promotion's Dallas branch in late spring 1991.

The new group held its initial taping at the Sportatorium (now billed as the "Global Dome", though it was instantly recognizable as the same venue where Dallas wrestling had run weekly for decades) on June 28, 1991, starting promisingly with Pedicino and television syndicator Max Andrews at the helm and a daily one-hour show on ESPN.  In addition to some of the former WCCW and USWA workers, a number of future stars would be showcased in the original Global Wrestling Federation, including Sean Waltman (aka Lightning Kid, Syxx, X-Pac), Jerry Lynn, Axl and Ian Rotten, Marcus "Handsome Stranger" Bagwell, Louie Spicolli and a very young Brandon Baxter, who hosted a "Teen Beat" segment on GWF TV prior to becoming a heel manager.

By mid-1992, due to dwindling attendance and the expense of flying wrestlers into Dallas, the promotion had run itself out of money and was taken over by Von Erich family attorney Grey Pierson.  Though it still boasted several up and coming young stars (including the Ebony Experience, later known as Harlem Heat; John Layfield AKA John Hawk, Bobby Duncum Jr. and Tony "Moadib"/"Ahmed Johnson" Norris), frequent screwjob finishes and ludicrous gimmicks and storylines became the order of the day under Pierson.  The group also began to rely heavily on comp tickets (made available via local auto dealership Westway Ford) to boost attendance for TV purposes, often resulting in no more than a few dozen paying customers out of a crowd of 2,000 or more.

Despite bringing in local favorites The Fabulous Freebirds toward the end of its run, Pierson's version of the GWF did not survive past the summer of 1994.

Following are all available GWF results, with all shows taking place at the Sportatorium except as indicated.

 BIG D PRO WRESTLING: 1992-94
Running concurrently with the GWF, Big D Pro Wrestling's shows (promoted by Gary Sturdivant, who wrestled as the masked Big D) were held at the Rocket Fiesta Palace, a converted skating rink in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas. It used mostly the available local talent, while occasionally bringing in nationally-known wrestlers like Diamond Dallas Page, Tommy Rich and Mick Foley for one-shot appearances. Launching in March 1992, the promotion's attendance rarely topped 300; it ran its final show on September 2, 1994 at a Holiday Inn in Lancaster, in front of a meager crowd of 38 fans.

Big D's results and statistics can be found at WrestlingData.com.

The one house show promoted by WCW at the Sportatorium is unfortunately remembered today not for the matches that took place, but for a frightening incident involving an elderly fan who unsuccessfully attempted to shoot Jake "The Snake" Roberts after the main event (see the Sportatorium page of the WCM FAQ).

JIM CROCKETT PROMOTIONS / NWA DALLAS: 1994-95
Following the demise of the GWF, Jim Crockett Jr., who had recently been involved in the failed World Wrestling Network along with Paul Heyman, made a brief attempt to promote at the Sportatorium beginning in October 1994. This effort was also unsuccessful, drawing crowds of no more than a few hundred for any of its shows despite the presence of several big name stars (including Tully Blanchard, Michael Hayes, Greg Valentine, Dick Murdoch, Junkyard Dog, the Rock 'n' Roll Express and the returning Kevin Von Erich).

The group left the Sportatorium shortly after what was promoted as a major tag team title tournament in April 1995 drew a disappointingly small crowd. It ran a few more spot shows in various towns before folding.

WORLD CLASS II: THE NEXT GENERATION
Despite the name, neither Fritz nor Kevin Von Erich had any connection with World Class II; it was promoted primarily by Gary Hart, who was later joined as co-promoter by retired Dallas judge  Ray Sowell.  Former WCCW television producer Mickey Grant and announcer Bill Mercer were Hart's partners when the promotion launched, but their involvement ended after only a few weeks; Chris Adams is also believed by some to have been a silent partner.  The tragically disabled mat legend  Johnny Valentine was featured as the group's "commissioner" for a time, beginning with the January 31 show.

Run on a minuscule budget, World Class II had no TV (the June 1 card at the Bronco Bowl was to be the promotion's first taping, but this did not materialize); like most of the post-Von Erich promotions in Dallas, it was sparsely attended, and ultimately closed its doors after a final show at the Sportatorium on August 1, with a permanent move to the Bronco Bowl being announced but never actually taking place.

TEXAS WRESTLING ALLIANCE
In August 1997, Judge Ray Sowell made an extremely short-lived attempt to continue promoting at the Sportatorium following Gary Hart's departure.  What passed for a program at the August 8 show perfectly illustrates how far Dallas wrestling had fallen by then:  trying to throw a show together at the very last minute and having no idea of who was available or what matches would be booked, Sowell simply thanked Sportatorium fans for their continued loyalty and support, and wished World Class II the best of luck running at the Bronco Bowl (in reality, as explained above, the group had folded).  The actual show was notable only as the former Marc Valiant's first appearance as Mark Von Erich, supposedly another of Waldo's sons.

TWA's second show on August 15 turned out to be its last, and almost did not take place, as the Confederate Wrestling Association, run by Rick "Buster" Fowler and Mike Morrow, was already preparing to move into the venue. Fans were locked out of the Sportatorium and waited in the parking lot while a dispute raged in its offices until nearly dusk, when management was finally persuaded to open the doors and allow Sowell's show to go on.

CONFEDERATE WRESTLING ALLIANCE: 1997-98
Promoters Rick "Buster" Fowler and Mike Morrow (aka Mike Blackheart) promoted at the Sportatorium from August to November 1997. Attendance did not improve from that of the promotions preceding it; at one point Fowler deliberately fed a rumor to the local news media that the Sportatorium would be demolished unless ticket sales picked up dramatically.  Although this was quickly revealed as a desperate hoax, the building was reportedly sold for $300,000 in mid-November and the CWA was forced out. Relocating for a short time to the once-nationally famous Longhorn Ballroom (the site of many country music concerts over the years, as well as an infamous 1978 Sex Pistols gig), the group eventually wound up running its last shows in Weatherford.

PROMOCIONES AZTECA DE LUCHA LIBRE: 1998
A final brief run of lucha libre shows at the Sportatorium in early 1998 (for which no information is available) was promoted by Arturo Agis' Promociones Azteca group.

Vacant for several years afterward, the venue was heavily damaged in a December 8, 2001 fire set by homeless persons who entered seeking warmth and shelter. Now unusable and unjustifiably expensive to repair, it was demolished in early 2003 (ironically beginning on February 10, the anniversary of David Von Erich's passing).
Although independent promotions continued to run elsewhere in the Metroplex, the era of wrestling at the Sportatorium had finally reached its sad, painfully prolonged end.
